How I Went About Pruning My Fruit Tree

by Jessica P

Pruning fruit trees is important, because it lets the sun reach all parts of the tree. That means the tree will live longer and the fruits will be better. I was determined not to call someone to do this for me, so I armed myself with a ladder and my best sewing scissors. I managed to get the ladder opened after thirty minutes and a pinched thumb, and then I climbed right up that thing feeling like Jack on the beanstalk.

I realized I knew nothing about pruning fruit trees as soon as I reached the first limb, but I decided it couldn't be that difficult. After attempting to cut one of the smaller limbs from my tree, it dawned upon me that scissors weren't going to get the job done. So I borrowed my husband's chain saw.

I figured it had to be better than those scissors. I didn't realize how loud it would sound and it startled me. I lost my footing and fell off the ladder, not before throwing the chain saw on the ground. Fortunately, the lawn is soft. Cursing that stupid chain saw, I went back up the ladder with it, and started it again. This time I was prepared.

Once again, I tried cutting that smaller limb. Did you know that chain saws are very sharp? The chain saw was aggressive and chomped into six and half limbs. My beautiful tree! About 1/4th of it was lying on the ground, and boy, was I really ticked off. Not to mention the fact that when those limbs fell, one of them hit me right in the forehead and left a big scratch. I would not give up.

How hard can pruning fruit trees possibly be? Getting the hedge shears, I climbed up in the tree this time. As I was going up, I kicked over the ladder by accident.

My head was bleeding, there was dirt stuck to my butt, and now I was stuck in that bleeping fruit tree. I was boiling mad by the time my husband found me. As my husband was laughing and I was walking back to the house, I gave that tree a look that would wither it and muttered, "Until Next Year!"
