5 Proactive Skin Care Tips For Adult Acne

by Amanda Beaty

One of the more aggravating health problems a generally healthy adult can face is that of persistent adult acne. It can be a contributing factor in things like social anxiety, depression, and a general loss of positive self-image. Fortunately, simple methods exist to aid you in clearing up your face and replacing adult acne with healthy, glowing skin.

Picking the right cosmetics is important because some causes acne or irritation in some peoples' skin. Cosmetics that have comodogenic on the label are better for acne-prone skin. Comodogenic means non-acne forming. Using minimal amounts of makeup also allows it to "breathe," reducing the likelihood of breakouts. Using these tips will reduce irritation of all kinds and generally improve the quality of your skin.

2. Watch what you eat: the belief that chocolate and greasy foods can intensify an acne outbreak has a basis in truth, but all foods have the potential to affect each individual's skin differently. People are more apt to experience worse acne when consuming these foods if they have sensitivity to it. To ascertain your food sensitivities, it is highly recommended that you keep a food diary to be able to pinpoint the foods that cause your outbreaks.

3. Clean your skin regularly: many people with adult acne are helped by merely washing the face two to three times per day with a gentle 'comedogenic' soap product. If you experience acne in places other than your face or neck, you can also use a comedogenic body wash.

4. Achieve the perfect moisture: it may surprise you, but adult acne can be caused by both the skin being too oily or too dry. That is because an imbalance in the skin's acid level, caused by oiliness or dryness, can manifest as acne. For proactive skin care, use facial products, such as soaps and moisturizers, that are specially formulated for your skin type.

5. Finally, it may surprise you to find out that your environment can be a cause of adult acne. Excessive air conditioning or heating, pollution, air quality problems, and airborne allergens can all take their toll. For proactive skin care, try to control your environment - and if this is not possible, clean your face with a gentle cleanser every time you must encounter environmental irritation.
