Canopy Bed Frames Make An Elegant Statement

by Lee Dobbins

I have always thought that no bed is more beautiful than a canopy bed. I have fond memories of this wrought iron bed that my mom and dad had when I was a kid. We were able to hang a canopy from it even though it wasn't actually a true canopy bed frame We made our secret playhouse out of blankets hung over the top of the bed frame when our parents weren't home. As a child I would pretend it was a fort, and ever since I have loved canopy bed frames. The canopy gives you a wonderful feeling of being sheltered from the whole world outside.

Although bed frame choices may have been limited in the past, currently you have a lot of choices in what kind of bed frame you want for your canopy bed. For my home I chose my personal favorite - the wrought iron bed frame. I love the heavy look and strength. You can easily find a lot of wooden bed frames that are both durable, solid, and stylish. The great thing about wooden frames is that you can't hurt yourself on them as easily, they weigh less than other materials, and they are gentler on your floors. A bed frame made of wood might be easier on your legs if you are prone to bumping into your bed when getting in or out.

The height of the canopy is an important consideration when shopping for canopy bed frames. Different people would say that different bed heights are ideal for their canopy bed, but that is mostly up to you and the height that your ceilings will accommodate. For some people, the higher up a canopy is, the better. Some customers look for that intimate feeling only canopy beds with lower canopies can provide. I really dislike overly low canopy beds. When there is not an adequate amount of air getting inside the bed, the result can be feelings of discomfort due to the stifling heat. This bothers some people more than others. Consider trying out as many beds as you'd like before making your final selection.

With so many choices in the stores you might also want to explore antique canopy bed frames. A quality bed that stands the test of time often stays in a family for generations. Wrought iron bedframes, and sometime wooden frames, can be passed down in a family for many generations. Beds from different historical periods can be purchased at your local antique store.
